Wire ampacity and breaker size are related, but they are not always the same number.
The wire ampacity tells you how much current a conductor can carry under the conditions of the installation.
The breaker size tells you the overcurrent protective device, also called the OCPD, used to protect the circuit.
What Is Wire Ampacity?
Wire ampacity is the allowable current for a conductor.
A wire may start with one ampacity based on its insulation rating, then change after job conditions are applied.
For example, the final ampacity can be affected by:
- Wire size
- Conductor material
- Insulation type
- Ambient temperature
- Number of current-carrying conductors
- Terminal temperature rating
That means the ampacity printed in a table is not always the final ampacity you can use for the job.
What Is Breaker Size?
Breaker size is the amp rating of the OCPD protecting the circuit.
Examples include:
- 15A breaker
- 20A breaker
- 30A breaker
- 40A breaker
- 50A breaker
The breaker helps protect the conductor and circuit from overcurrent.
Why They Are Not Always the Same
A selected conductor may have an ampacity that does not match a standard breaker size exactly.
For example, after temperature correction and conductor adjustment, a wire may end up with a final allowable ampacity between common breaker sizes.
That is why you need to look at both values:
- The conductor ampacity after job conditions are applied
- The OCPD result for that conductor
The correct breaker result can be the same size, the next size down, or the next size up when applicable.
Quick Example
Say you select a conductor for a circuit.
First, check the conductor’s base insulation ampacity.
Then enter the ambient temperature, number of current-carrying conductors, and terminal rating.
The result may show:
- Base insulation ampacity
- Derated ampacity
- Terminal-limited ampacity
- OCPD result
This helps show why the wire ampacity and breaker size should be checked together.
How Sparky Toolbox Helps
The Sparky Toolbox Wire Size, Derating, and Breaker Calculator lets you select a conductor and enter the installation conditions.
The calculator shows:
- Insulation base ampacity
- Derated ampacity
- Terminal-limited ampacity
- OCPD result
That gives you a clearer starting point before choosing a breaker or ordering wire.
Important Reminder
Wire ampacity and breaker selection depend on the actual circuit, equipment, installation conditions, and applicable rules.
Always verify conductor information, equipment ratings, approved plans, and local inspection requirements before installation.
